Introduction of Nagaur

Nagaur is a city in Rajasthan. It lies in the middle of Jodhpur and Bikaner. From Jodhpur it is just at 135 kms. It is a historical town which has many palaces and shrines and also an ancient fort. It is a famous place as the state’s biggest cattle fairs are held here. Mainly this place is occupied by farming Jats, and Bishnoi community. Climate of Nagaur is very dry and summers are usually hot. The winter season is from November to March. Rainy season is from July to September.

Here you will enjoy the rustic rural charm and the colorful life which can be even seen on the way. Here you can see the most interesting sight of the red chillies which are being dried in open fields. Here the tourists can enjoy the impressive fort and also the beautiful tourist camps. History of Nagaur

Glorified by the bards, the history of Nagaur finds mention even in the Mahabharata. The kingdom of Ahichhatrapur which Arjun is said to have conquered and subsequently offered to his Guru Dronacharya, was perhaps some of the area of the Nagaur district. The birth place of Meera and Abul Fazal, Nagaur district has a charbhuja and Parsawanath Temple at Merta and the Dargah of Sufi Saint Tarkin at Nagaur city. Nagaur also witnessed the valour of Great Rao Amar Singh Rathor who challenged the mighty Mughal empire. The large old Fort has many glorious tales of bravery of the erstwhile rulers of the states.

Nagaur District is situated between 260.50” & 270.40” North Latitude & 730.10” & 750.15” East Longitude. It is situated amidst seven districts namely Bikaner, Churu, Sikar, Jaipur, Ajmer, Pali, Jodhpur. Nagaur is the fifth largest district in Rajasthan with a vast terrain spreading over 17,718 square kilometres. Its geographical spread is a good combine of plain, hills, sand mounds & as such it is a part of the great Indian Thar Desert.

The present district of Nagaur finds a place in the heart of the Rajasthan state. If we draw a cross over the map of Rajasthan the centre of this cross is bound to fall in the district of Nagaur. Before the merger of the states, Nagaur was a part of the erstwhile Jodhpur State. .

After indepenence, Nagaur had the honour of being selected as the place in the country from where the Democratic Decentralisation process was launched by the late Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India on the 2nd October 1959.

The town of Ladnu in the district has gained its place on the map of the country being the headquarters of the famous 'Jain Vishwa Bharti' which has become a centre of spiritual learnings & knowledge under the leadership of Acharya Tulsi, a great Jain saint, who has propagated the philosophy of "ANUVRAT" in order to enlighten people in this area of the country.

Nagaur Fair
The Jodhpur Nagaur Fair is the second biggest fair in India. The fair goes on for eight days. Nagaur Fair of Jodhpur, Rajasthan is held every year during the month of Jan-Feb.

It is popularly known as the Cattle fair of Nagaur. This is because the Nagaur Fair is mainly all about trading of animals. Approximately 70,000 bullocks, camels and horses are traded every year in this fair. The animals lavishly decorated and even their owners dress up wearing colorful turbans and long moustaches. Other trading in the Nagaur Fair in Jodhpur, India consists of sheep to Marwari horses to spices. Some other attractions include the Mirchi bazaar (largest red-chilly market of India), wooden items, iron-crafts and camel leather accessories.

Nagaur Cattle Fair  
Nagaur is the very famous quaint and scenic town in Rajasthan. It attracts huge number of tourists during the cattle fair popularly referred to as the Nagaur Cattle Fair, Nagaur.

The Nagaur Cattle Fair in Nagaur marks the trading of cattle on an expansive and extensive scale. This fair is celebrated for 8 days on an annual basis. It usually takes place in the Hindu month of Magha that comprises of January and February months of English.

The Nagaur Cattle Fair, Nagaur is reputed to be the second biggest cattle fair of Rajasthan. In this fair as many as 70, 000 bullocks, camels and horses are traded and owing to the presence of this huge number of cattle this fair has been assigned great importance. However it is just not the number factor for which this fair has risen into popularity. It is also about the quality of the cattle that has earned it a special reputation.

Nagaur Fort
Sandy fort; centrally located; 2nd century old; witnessed many battles; lofty walls & spacious campus; having many palaces & temples inside.

Tarkeen Dargah

Most renowned after the Ajmer Dargah; sacred place for Muslims & Sufis.

Jain Temple in Glass

Khinvsar Fort
Situated 42 km away from Nagaur on the National Highway No. 65 towards Jodhpur; 500 years old fort in the middle of the Thar Desert; turned into a hotel furnished with modern facilities. Mugal Emperor Aurangzeb used to stay here; Khinvsar town has 25 small temples; black deer roaming in herds are a very popular tourist attraction.

Dadhimati Temple
Also known as Goth-Manglod temple; 40 km away from Nagaur; the oldest temple of the district constructed during the Gupta Dynasty (4th Century); Kul Devi of Dadhich Brahimins.

Meera Bai Temple
Also known as the Charbhuja temple; 400 years old; evidences how total surrender helps attain godly qualities; how deep faith converts poison to 'Amrit'.
Bhanwal Matta Temple - 25 km away from Merta City; carries a very interesting story that when thieves were found to be under threat of life they remembered mother by heart; mother appeared for their rescue; temple was got constructed under obligation; the thieves who escaped vowed never to commit theft again; mother takes two a half cups of wine from a true seeker.

By Air
Nagaur can be reached from Jaipur Airport which lies at a distance of 293 km while Jodhpur airport is 135 km away.

By Rail
Jaipur is the convenient rail head from Nagaur from where excellent connection are available to major destinations of India. Some important train connections are - Ranakpur Express from Bikaner to Ratangarh via Nagaur.

By Road
Rajasthan Roadways connects the place to every corner of the state while Chauffeur-driven air-conditioned cars can be hired for local viewing. Jodhpur at a distance of 135km is the nearest by bus.
